There have several attempts by different sources to try and list the smartest countries in the world, however whichever criteria they choose to use, there always seems to be controversy. I have therefore compiled this list by averaging the thoughts from those other lists which considered the highest percentage of university degree graduates, the highest percentage of secondary graduates and as, in terms of a country’s smartness, much emphasis is put on the development of science and technology, the percentage of money a country spends on these.
Germany’s development as a smart country really started after the Second World War but it certainly attained smartness after that. It has now become one of the leading countries in the development of heavy equipment and has reached the top of the field in automobile manufacturing.
It may only be relatively small but its population is certainly well educated. The Swiss people are well enough educated to be independent on other countries and is often the place that large corporations will seek to have their HQs in.
Once ruling a large portion of the world, the UK has often been considered as one of the world leaders in many fields and its vast amount of inventions and technical experience, certainly means that it deserves a place on this list.
This is another small country and in fact only has one university but it manages to attain 35% of its population having a high degree of education and it is that statistic that earns it its place on this list.
Considering that Finland has free university education, it is hardly surprising that it makes this list. Its place is assured though, due to over 30% of degrees attained, are in the fields of technology and science.
Israel beginnings started not too long ago with only 1600 people enrolled for higher education but today that number has swelled to 206,000 and as to perhaps testament to its advancements in technology, Google now has a second HQ there.
With almost 8 out of 11 people in the country holding degree level education, many people would list Canada as top the education field and is certainly heading towards the top of the technology field as it tries to increase its workforce by investing in science and technology projects.
Well developed in the field of technology, South Korea not only has the fastest internet speeds but is also working on a project to have a robot in every home.
United States of America
As probably known to most people, the United States leads the field in many areas of technology and science and so will, for the foreseeable future, always be towards the top end of this list.
There is little doubt that Japan is the leader when it comes to the field of technology and there is practically no country that gets by without its technology in one form or another. The list of leading technology companies that have their roots in Japan are far too numerous to name here.
